Why password-protect a PDF?

A password-protected PDF can only be opened by someone who knows the password. This is useful when:

  • Sending payslips, contracts, or financial documents by email.
  • Sharing medical or legal documents where confidentiality matters.
  • Complying with data protection requirements (GDPR, HIPAA) when sending personal data.
  • Preventing casual access to sensitive files stored in shared cloud folders.

How to add a password to a PDF for free

  1. Go to signvert.com/tools/protect-pdf.
  2. Drop your PDF onto the page or click "Choose PDF".
  3. Enter your chosen password in the password field. Use the "Show" toggle to verify it.
  4. Click "Protect PDF" and download the encrypted file.

The encryption runs entirely in your browser using pdf-lib. Your PDF and your password are never sent to any server.

What type of encryption is used?

The tool applies AES-128 encryption, which is the standard used by most PDF viewers and is sufficient for protecting sensitive personal and business documents. For classified or highly sensitive material, consider additional security measures beyond PDF passwords.

How to share the password securely

Never send the password in the same email as the PDF. Best practices:

  • Send the password by SMS or phone call.
  • Use a separate email with a time delay.
  • Use a password manager's secure sharing feature.
  • Agree on a shared password in advance (e.g. the recipient's date of birth for payslips).

Can I remove a password from a PDF?

Yes — open the PDF in your browser (you'll be prompted for the password), then print it to PDF (File → Print → Save as PDF). The resulting file will not have a password. Alternatively, use Adobe Acrobat Reader's "Remove Security" option if you have access to it.

What's the difference between a user password and an owner password?

A user password (also called an open password) prevents the PDF from being opened at all without the password. An owner password allows opening but restricts printing, copying, or editing. The Signvert tool sets a user password — the most common requirement for document security.
